The 0-0 draw on Tuesday night between Leicester and Manchester City ensured that Arsenal will have spent Christmas and New Year top of the Premier League.
That’s a fair achievement given the injury crisis that has blighted Arsene Wenger’s side this term, with up to nine first-team players absent at various times.
Arsenal’s midfield has been notably hit, with Francis Coquelin, Santi Cazorla, Mikel Arteta all out injured, leaving Mathieu Flamini, Calum Chambers and Aaron Ramsey to fill the void.
Arsene Wenger isn’t hanging around and comments in recent weeks have left us in little doubt the Frenchman will be making a move for midfield players in the coming transfer window.
High on the list looks like being Inter Milan’s Marcelo Brozovic.
The Serie A giants signed the 23-year-old on loan from Dynamo Zagreb, but have recently taken up an option to make the deal permanent.
However, should Arsenal come knocking with a bid nearing £20m it is believed Inter will sell the Croatian to the England side straight away.
The Zagreb-born player hasn’t quite become a first-team regular at the San Siro, and the promise of first-team football could sway at decision with a place in Croatia’s squad at Euro 2016 up for grabs this summer.
Arsenal are reputed to have kept watch on Brozovic, and having settled well in Italy, it appears Wenger will be happy to take the chance on a January move.
Brozovic would also come with the bonus of being eligible to play in Europe, with Inter not in European competition this season.
The Gunners are 11/10 for this season’s Premier League title, and with a Champions League round of 16 clash coming up against Barcelona, Wenger may feel £18m for a fully fit midfielder eligible for Europe could be well worth shelling out for.
