Having confirmed his intention to stay with Inter Milan last summer, Wesley Sneijder is now considering his options with the news that Manchester United are interested.
Inter president Massimo Moratti is determined to hand onto his star forward despite the interest from the Premier League leaders, and the £40m valuation that Inter have placed on Sneijder could dampen Sir Alex Ferguson’s interest.
“The interest from Manchester United in Sneijder is real,” Moratti said.
“But I didn’t look into it. My only interest is seeing Sneijder play here for many more years to come.”
Ferguson sees the 26-year-old as the ideal replacement for Paul Scholes and the Old Trafford board believe a deal can be done for somewhere in the region of £31m, and with Ferguson confirming he will make three signings in the summer, Sneijder could be the big name move.
Manchester United could potentially meet Inter Milan in the semi-finals of the Champions League, and Sneijder’s influence in helping Inter to a treble should not be underestimated.
Manchester United are 5/6 to qualify from their quarter-final with Chelsea while Inter are 4/11 to qualify from their tie with Schalke.
Should the two meet in the semi-final Manchester United would be the short favourites if the Champions League winner betting is taken into consideration.
Inter are 9/1 to win the Champions League but Manchester United are favoured at 6/1, but considering Inter are so short to qualify, the value is in backing the Italian side at 9/1.
Sneijder would relish a tie against his potential suitors and both he and Samuel Eto’o would provide the Manchester United backline with a real test.
It’s no doubt a signing that Manchester United fans would love to see happen and the Dutch maestro would be an asset to Manchester United’s 2011/12 Premier League charge – a title they are 6/4 to win.
