Despite an impressive start to the season in the face of difficult circumstances, Hull City will struggle when caretaker boss Mike Phelan faces his former club Manchester United this weekend.

The Red Devils’ resurgence under Jose Mourinho is already evident, with victories over Leicester City, Bournemouth and Southampton giving the north-west giants a 100 per cent start to the season.

And this is a fixture where the visitors have an impressive record, having chalked up seven wins and one draw in the previous eight meetings, netting 21 goals in the process.

The hosts could also struggle to match United’s energy as the game wears on, with Phelan having played a full-strength side on Tuesday night as the Tigers laboured to victory at Exeter City in the EFL Cup.

One man likely to pounce on any weakness from the Humberside outfit will be Wayne Rooney. The 30-year-old netted against Bournemouth on the opening weekend with a sweet header, and his record against Hull suggests he’s worth backing to get back among the goals here.

Having scored seven times in his last five outings against the Tigers, the 8/5 for the England captain to net again here is excellent value, while the 9/1 for him to score twice or more could be an inspired selection.

However, Hull have scored in three of their last six meetings with United, so the 11/4 for the Red Devils to win and both teams to score could also be a smart bet.

Man United are 9/20 favourites for victory in the match betting, with 7/2 for the draw, while 7/1 says the hosts can defy the odds again with an unlikely victory.

Fancy United’s Swedish star to continue his good run with a brace at the KCOM Stadium? Our fantastic price boost has pushed out odds on Zlatan Ibrahimovic to score twice or more – was 4/1 NOW 6/1.
