Hull City set to bolster attack with Uruguay international

After being rebuffed by Blackburn Rovers in their attempts to sign Jordan Rhodes, Hull City have apparently moved further afield in their hunt for a new striker.

Palermo and Uruguay forward Abel Hernandez is reportedly set to join the club in what could be a hefty £9.5m deal for the Tigers, who recently sold Shane Long to Southampton for £12m.

The 24-year-old would represent something of a coup for Steve Bruce’s side, especially as he recently turned down a chance to join Champions League side Benfica.

Hernandez has been with Palermo since 2009 and scored 14 goals in 28 Serie B games to help the Rosanero return to the Italian top-flight last season.

The pacy attacker also has an excellent record with the Uruguay national team, scoring seven times in 14 caps thus far.

Hernandez made the squad for the World Cup in Brazil but didn’t feature in the tournament, although more chances could be forthcoming while Luis Suarez serves his ban.

Hull are in desperate need of a new striker before the deadline passes, with Long only sold due to the extravagant nature of the fee offered by Southampton.

Following the Irishman’s departure Bruce only has Nikica Jelavic and Yannick Sagbo as senior strikers to call on at the KC Stadium, while Sone Aluko can also fill in upfront.

If he could hit his straps for the Tigers, you would expect Hernandez to end up at the top of that modest pecking order.

Hull have made a promising start to the season taking four points form their first two Premier League matches, and are next in action in the second-leg of Europa League play-off against Sporting Lokeren.

Having lost the first-leg 1-0 in Belgium, Hull are 1/2 to beat Lokeren at the KC.
