Manchester City fans will have high expectations for the coming season after toppling neighbours, United, to win their first Premier League crown.

They’ve got a long way to go before they can measure up against the Red Devils though, with their 1998/99 treble-winning triumph the pinnacle of their many achievements. City fans will be looking to emulate, if not better, this and you can back them at 50/1 to do it in 2012/13.

If they are to follow in their city rivals’ footsteps, aside from significant squad improvement, they will have to defy the latest chapters of the history books.

City should be wary of the fact that it is only United who have reigned as domestic kings before conquering Europe which was, coincidentally, the final piece of their treble puzzle.

It’s 6/1 for City to put a stop to this trend by winning the Champions League and if that was the only trophy in the cabinet at the Etihad come the end of the season, disappointment is not likely to be the overriding feeling amongst anyone associated with the club.

However, Chelsea’s rearguard heroics in Munich also provided City with another historical obstacle to overcome if they want to bring home Europe’s most coveted prize next May.

No representative of any nation has been able to follow either their own continental success, or that of a compatriot, with a second consecutive win since Italy’s Champions League stalwarts, AC Milan, defended their title in 1989/90.

The domestic double has become an unfashionable accolade in recent seasons, with Chelsea the only side to pull it off in the past 10 years.

This pales in comparison to when it was all the rage in the previous decade when it happened once every other season. It’s 9/1 that City will risk reprimand from the fashion police and lift the Premier League and FA Cup trophies next May.
