Gomis would be mad to choose Cardiff over Swansea

Cardiff City have been long-time admirers of Olympique Lyonnais’ French international striker Bafetimbi Gomis, but it seems that the possibility has emerged that their more cultured and successful Welsh brethren at Swansea are set to cut in on the deal.

Swans gaffer Michael Laudrup has so far been frustrated in his bids to strengthen his strike force, with interest in Celta Vigo’s Iago Aspas, Leandro Baptistao of Atletico Madrid and Wigan’s Arouna Kone deflected.

The goal-scoring exploits of Michu (an attacking midfielder by trade) last term did much to hide the fact that many of the other strikers – Leroy Lita and Luke Moore among them – in the Swansea squad are a little short of Premier League quality.

If Swansea are to continue upon their upward trajectory, improving their out-and-out striker options looks to be a necessity.

Gomis has been a reliable source of top flight goals for St Etienne and then Lyon for some time and the 27-year-old hitman is the only player in Ligue 1 to chip in with 10 goals or more in each of the last seven seasons.

He was right at the top of his game again in 2012/13, equalling his best league haul of 16 strikes as Lyon finished third.

The Swans’ intercession will be far from welcome for Cardiff, who cannot really compete in terms of attractiveness as a footballing destination for the Frenchman.

The Bluebirds will have their work cut out staying in the top flight in the coming season, whereas their Welsh rivals are equipped with all the necessary luxuries to attract a player of Gomis’ pedigree.

An upwardly mobile side known for attractive football, with an up-and-coming manager/legendary player calling the shots on the training ground and European football on the cards courtesy of their Capital One Cup win, is a package that Gomis is sure to find more appealing than a relegation battle with the Cardiff – 6/5 to be relegated in 2013/14.
