Premier League winners: Man United

Jose Mourinho’s appointment as Manchester United manager has ushered in a new optimism among the Old Trafford faithful, and nobody is happier about the new appointment than England and United legend Gary Pallister.

The classy centre-back won four Premier League titles with the Red Devils during the 1990s, and he told Ladbrokes News that he’s confident Mourinho can bring the glory days back to the north-west giants.

“Jose has a great CV”, Pallister told us. “I’m confident he can handle a club the size of Manchester United. He’s succeeded at Real Madrid, Chelsea, and Inter Milan – but United are a different animal”.

“What the club has meant to so many people – from the Busby Babes to the European success under Sir Alex [Ferguson] make Man United a one-of-a-kind club”, he added.

“Everyone is excited about the fact Mourinho has arrived at Old Trafford”, Pallister claimed. “He has the charisma and character to succeed in this job.”

Having lifted the league title in his first season at Porto, Chelsea, and Inter Milan, the Portuguese boss has plenty of experience of quickly assembling a winning side.

“He’ll be looking to win the league. His comments since joining United suggest he’s confident of doing that. The fans will love to hear those sorts of remarks, and the players will have got a lift from the manager’s stance, as well” explained Pallister.

Having won Man United’s first European trophy under Fergie in 1991, ‘Pally’ told us he expects Mourinho’s winning mentality to stretch to the Europa League this season.

“We’ve seen some managers not give the tournament the respect it deserves – but I doubt that will be the case with Mourinho. He wants to win every piece of silverware going”, he remarked.

And the three-time Emirates FA Cup winner insists any rumours of unease between the current Old Trafford boss and his most successful predecessor are nonsense.

“The idea there’s an issue with Sir Alex being there in the background is nonsense. They’re good friends, and I don’t think his presence around the ground will raise itself as an issue anymore.”

Man United begin the Premier League season with a trip to Bournemouth, where they’re 3/4 to avenge last season’s Dean Court disaster by taking all three points.

They’re currently 3/1 second-favourites for the title behind local rivals Manchester City, but if Pallister’s confidence turns out to be accurate, fans backing the Red Devils at that price could be raking in a windfall come May.

Gary Pallister was talking at Ladbrokes’ launch as the official betting partner of the FA.
