Newcastle’s Yohan Cabaye could be set to join Juan Mata at Old Trafford with David Moyes poised to thwart PSG’s attempts to land the France ace.
The mega-rich Parisians offered around £14m for the former Lille man last week, but with Magpies manager Alan Pardew describing the offer as derisory the Red Devils gaffer could yet step in.
Newcastle value the midfielder at around £25m and while that may seem a little steep for a player that has bagged just 18 Premier League goals in two and a half seasons at St James’ Park, United have shown through the £37m capture of Mata that they are prepared to shell out in a bid to ensure a top four finish.
The champions are currently priced at 13/5 to secure a Champions League berth and fans will be slightly more confident of that after Mata put pen to paper on a four-year deal.
The addition of Cabaye would not set pulses racing in the way the Mata deal has but the Newcastle man is tried and tested in the Premier League and has put in a number of match-winning displays for the Magpies over the past few seasons.
Moyes will face competition from Arsenal manger Arsene Wenger should Newcastle decide to sell but, while Arsenal are flying high this season, the United manager will be confident that Old Trafford is still the bigger draw.
Upon signing Mata, Moyes indicated that the Spaniard will be the “first of many” new faces to join the Red Devils this year and while the majority of that activity is expected to take place in the summer, Cabaye’s experience and Champions League eligibility could see this deal hurried through in the coming days.
