Wolves look set to turn to former Rangers manager Walter Smith to steer them away from the foot of the Premier League table, with the Scotsman now looking a shoe-in at 1/1 to take over at Molineux.

Smith has been out of work since his amicable departure from Ibrox in the summer, and while he has seen the fortunes of his former club plummet, he is believed to be open to the idea of a new challenge in the form of a Premier League relegation scrap.

It is believed that Wolves could approach Smith with a deal that would tie him to the Midlands club only until the summer, which would be attractive to the 63-year-old, who has past Premier League experience with Everton.

The Molineux club are keen to avoid a panic appointment, with chief executive Jez Moxey outlining that a candidate with Premier League experience would be preferable, but they are keen to resolve the situation shortly, following snubs from Alan Curbishley and Brian McDermott of Reading.

Steve Bruce is still awaiting news regarding the success of his interview with the club last Friday, and would fit the bill as an experienced Premier League boss, but a purported fan backlash is feared by the Wolves boardroom, following Bruce’s less than sparkling record at the top level.

Bruce is 7/4 in the Premier League odds to be next Wolves manager.

Terry Connor is another probable option as he was assistant to McCarthy during his tenure at the club and can be backed at 4/1.

Connor will take charge of the side for Saturday’s trip to Newcastle, and a positive result against a side that has performed so admirably this season would significantly boost the chances of the former assistant landing the job on a permanent basis.

It would currently appear to be one from three to be appointed at Wolves, though the respect that Smith would command from the squad would look to make him the ideal candidate to aid their relegation fight.
