They’ve been linked with a string of talented players this summer, but the one Everton need to go and secure is Juan Mata from Manchester United.
That’s the view from today’s @Ladbrokes Twitter poll, which plonked the Spaniard alongisde three other Toffees targets, asking who would be the biggest arrival at Goodison.
Mata was up against Zenit’s Belgian ace Axel Witsel, Sporting Lisbon defender William Carvalho, plus Swansea and Wales skipper Ashley Williams.
In the end it was a resounding nod of approval for United’s Mata, who raced home with 47 per cent of the vote.
It seems the view is the Spaniard would slot in well under new boss Ronald Koeman at Everton, while Jose Mourinho’s arrival at Manchester adds more speculation on a move.
Tweeters couldn’t be split on second, with 18 per cent apiece on Williams and Witsel.
In truth, behind Mata it was remarkably even, with William Carvalho fourth, but only just on 17 per cent.
With less than two weeks until the start of the new season, Everton certainly need to start getting the credit card out.
The Toffees have only splashed the cash on Fulham goalkeeper Marten Stekelenburg and Aston Villa’s Idrissa Gueye so far, and with near-enough every Premier League side spending record amounts this summer, more signings are surely needed.
And according to today’s vote, the number one target should be Man United’s number eight.
Everton begin their new era under Koeman at home to Tottenham, and if they do land Mata – and keep Lukaku – they’ll be many getting on their 7/2 odds to finish in the top six.
