After hearing that Fabio Borini could be out until December with a groin injury, Sunderland manager David Moyes is on the prowl for a free agent to fill the gap, and the obvious target is Victor Anichebe.

Borini’s absence leaves the Black Cats with 33-year-old Jermain Defoe and 17-year-old Joel Asoro as the only recognised strikers.

Steven Naismith was a Deadline Day target, but personal terms couldn’t be agreed with the Norwich City striker.

But Anichebe is a free agent having left West Brom this summer, and he’s a player Moyes knows extremely well.

The Nigerian international isn’t one to break goalscoring records, but a sizeable frame and a hustling attitude with plenty of pace means he’s well-worth bringing in, especially on a free.

Still only 28, Anichebe still has plenty to offer a club in the Premier League, and he was handed his Everton debut by Moyes in 2006.

With Defoe ready to play the fox in the box role to fine effect once more, Anichebe could be an excellent foil for the former Tottenham and West Ham striker.

Sunderland’s approach for Naismith again showed the club weren’t looking for an out-and-out goalscorer, again supporting the theory that a player like Anichebe could suit Moyes and the club right now.

Handily the ex-Manchester United boss has a week off to plan his next move, with the international break in full swing.

The Wearsiders have one point from their opening three games so far this term, and in a ironic twist, they will host Everton when the Premier League resumes next weekend.

Ronald Koeman has got the Toffees off to a flying start, but could they come unstuck against not only their former manager, but former striker too?

Sunderland are 5/2 to win next Monday, but if the powerful Anichebe is in the squad and ready to impress, they could be worth backing.
