Wayne Rooney looked all but set to make a move to the Chinese Super League this month. But while a move failed to the Far East failed to materialise, it looks almost certain that the Manchester United legend will be exiting Old Trafford sometime in the near future.
In fact, he could be off as soon as the summer transfer window opens, with reports suggesting that Ronald Koeman is keen on bringing England’s all-time leading goalscorer back to Goodison Park.
And the latest odds seem to support those rumours, with the Toffees now odds-on at 10/11 for Rooney’s signature.
They had been 9/4 two weeks ago to secure his services, but with interest in the 31-year-old dying down in the Far East, it’s Koeman who now looks the most likely manager to add the forward to his ranks this summer.
Wazza was forced to watch Man United’s EFL Cup triumph a Wembley from the bench last weekend, and has started just eight league games for the Red Devils this season – the last being on December 17.
Speaking about Rooney’s potential Goodison Park arrival, Koeman said:
“What will happen at the end of the season? I don’t know but in my opinion he is one of the players who can make Everton more stronger [sic]. It’s all about what the player likes, what Manchester United needs to do, and we are not involved in that project. But every player that we at Everton think can make the team stronger is welcome to Everton.”
It’s likely Rooney’s next destination will be the talk of the summer transfer window. But with Everton looking more likely than ever to bring their former prodigy back home, this deal could well be wrapped up as soon as the final Premier League whistle is blown in May.
What do fans think of the latest odds? Should supporters be getting excited yet? Is Rooney the kind of player Everton need?
