Everton have thrown their hat into the ring in the race to sign highly-rated Ipswich defender Tyrone Mings.

Arsenal are thought to be at the head of the queue to sign the Portman Road star, who just two years ago was plying his trade for non-league Chippenham Town, but with the Gunners placing the likes of Liam Moore and Virgil van Dijk higher on the list of priorities Everton could steal a march.

The Toffees will also face competition from Sunderland, with Black Cats manager Gus Poyet understandably looking to beef up his defence in the wake of the embarrassing 8-0 defeat at Southampton last week.

Ipswich have so far managed to rebuff any offers for the 21-year-old, with Mick McCarthy swatting away a £3m bid from Crystal Palace in the summer, but as the bigger boys start circling the money on offer, both to the club and the player, could see the situation change.

Everton halted a poor run of results at the weekend by recording a 3-0 victory over Aston Villa but their early season form has seen them drift out to 9/1 to secure a top four Premier League finish.

With a number of Roberto Martinez’s defensive options the wrong side of 30 the Spaniard is on the lookout for new talent and knows that he needs to move sooner rather than later if he is to land his man.

Leighton Baines looks set to remain first choice left back for some time but should Everton acquire 6ft3in Mings he would offer them a different, more powerful option.

Ipswich remain reluctant to sell, with the club focusing on a promotion push, but the chance to make a huge profit on a player that cost just £10,000 could be too good to refuse.

Everton will hope to take the confidence from their win over Villa at the weekend into the Europa League this week with a trip to Lille, for which they are priced at 21/10.

Then it’s a return to domestic action and a more winnable fixture against Burnley, where a Toffees victory is available at 5/6.
