David Moyes’ former club proved to be the final nail in his Manchester United career and the Toffees are set to further humiliate the Scot by getting the best out of a player who was marginalised during the 50-year-old’s ill-fated Old Trafford reign.
Everton manager Roberto Martinez is to rub salt in the wounds with a £15m bid for England midfielder Tom Cleverley, who has been used as a scapegoat for many of United’s failings this year.
Ryan Giggs has taken temporary charge of the club but Louis van Gaal and Jurgen Klopp lead the betting to be the next permanent boss at 11/4 and 4/1 respectively and Cleverley could be tempted to jump ship in order to play under a manager he knows has faith in his abilities.
It was under Martinez while on loan at Wigan that Cleverley started to shine and ultimately forced his way into the midfield reckoning under Sir Alex Ferguson at United.
However, with Moyes spending over £70m on the midfield pairing of Juan Mata and Marouane Fellaini the 24-year-old found game time increasingly hard to come by.
Whether it is Klopp or Van Gaal who replaces Moyes in the Old Trafford dugout, beefing up the lacklustre midfield will be the first port of call and Cleverley is unlikely to survive a reshuffle under either man.
Klopps’ relationship with Marco Reus, who has already been heavily linked with a move to United, makes that transfer all the more likely and with the Borussia Dortmund manager knowing how to get the best out of Shinji Kagawa there would be little room left for the England man.
Martinez is keen to add the United man to his midfield and with Ross Barkley flying high under the Spaniard and all but guaranteeing himself a trip to Brazil this summer Cleverley will hope a switch to Goodison Park could have the same impact on his own career.
