As the old saying goes, fame often comes at a price. In this case it’s the rise to prominence of Aston Villa midfielder Fabian Delph which is set to cost his club a fair bit in improved wages.

Delph’s sudden rise to England starter has apparently sparked Villa owner Randy Lerner straight into action regarding his current contract situation.

The American is personally overseeing the drawing up of a new bumper £10m deal worth £50k per week to stop his head being turned in the near future.

Having been Villa’s beacon during an otherwise gloomy Premier League campaign last season, Delph earned himself a place in Roy Hodgson’s new-look England squad to face Norway and entered the fray for his first cap in the second half.

Somewhat surprisingly he was then selected as part of a diamond midfield quartet for his full Three Lions bow, where he completed 90 minutes of an impressive 2-0 victory over Switzerland.

Aside from a frantic opening 20 mins, where the 24-year-old’s overzealousness to impress saw him booked for a series of mistimed challenges, Delph grew in stature during the match.

Delph transferred the energy and dynamism he’s shown in claret and blue over the past 12 months to the international stage and could become a Roy Hodgson regular during the Euro 2016 qualification process.

Meanwhile, Lerner and Villa fans will simply be hoping Delph continues to do the business in the Premier League, starting with a trip to Anfield next.

Although Paul Lambert’s side have started by grabbing seven of the first nine available points, Liverpool are sure to provide their sternest examination so far, though a 2-2 draw was secured last season.

The same result this time around can be backed at 5/1.
