Cup competitions most likely source of success for Liverpool

Having come so close to claiming a first Premier League trophy last season, Brendan Rodgers would have felt nabbing some silverware in 2014/15 wouldn’t have been too far beyond him as the dust settled on his runners-up campaign.

Since then, more than a few suitcases of money have come and gone at Anfield, as Luis Suarez left for Barcelona and most of Southampton’s first team replaced him.

After such upheaval in the off season, and without their best player to rely on, just how realistic a goal is winning a trophy for Liverpool in the coming campaign?

According to Ladbrokes, who have priced up the chances of each of the top six’s trophy hunt, it’s an 8/5 shot that the Reds claim a major trophy of any kind this season, while going medal-less is rated a stronger possibility, at 2/7.

For the first time since 2009/10, Liverpool are fighting on four fronts but at 28/1 to win the Champions League, are unfancied to make much of an impact on Europe.

Having last ruled the country in a league back in 1990, before English football became Rupert Murdoch’s plaything, all of Liverpool’s recent trophy-winning achievements have come in the cup competitions.

With that in mind, the 50/1 offered on Rodgers claiming an FA and Capital One Cup double looks the best punt on the list.

A Cup treble, similar to the one the Reds famously claimed in 2001 when winning both domestic competitions as well as the UEFA Cup, is 1000/1 to bare out this term with the Champions League subbing in for the old Europa League.

Claiming the Premier League and Champions League titles in a double haul of “A List” trophies is perhaps a little short at 125/1 considering the club’s recent lack of success in winning a league competition, but will likely have a few supporters should the Reds make a fast start to the campaign.
