Crystal Palace will attempt to lure Swansea striker Bafetimbi Gomis away from the Liberty Stadium in the coming weeks, according to reports.

Eagles manager Neil Warnock has long bemoaned his club’s lack of an out-and-out goalscorer and was left frustrated again as his side spurned a number of chances in the weekend’s 1-1 draw with Stoke.

Dwight Gayle and Wilfried Zaha have come in for particular criticism, with the manager saying he has been “disappointed” with their input both in matches and in training.

In recent weeks Warnock has revealed that he is looking to secure a player in the “Christian Benteke mould” in the January transfer window and now out-of-favour Swansea man Gomis has emerged as his primary target.

Gomis arrived as a free signing from Lyon, having netted 17 goals during his final season with the Ligue 1 outfit, but despite scoring in only his third game for the Welsh club has been forced to make do with a bit-part role this term.

The 29-year-old has played second fiddle to Wilfried Bony and as such has struggled to find form, scoring just two goals in 16 appearances this year.

However, Warnock believes a run of first-team games will soon have the forward back to his best and as such the Palace boss is leading the chase to land the £5m-rated Frenchman.

Palace fans will hope the interest turns into a concrete offer, with the Eagles now just one point above the relegation zone after a run of just one win in 10 games.

This weekend sees Palace take on Manchester City at the Etihad and with the visitors a distant 7/1 to take all three points Warnock could well find his side in the drop zone come Christmas.

If the south London club are to have a better second half of the season and ultimately secure their top flight status then a serious goal threat – Gomis or otherwise – is a must.
