When Harry Redknapp says Luka Modric and Gareth Bale aren’t going anywhere this summer, nobody believes him and the papers are full of speculation linking Modric to Chelsea this morning.

While Modric has been linked to a number of top clubs, including Manchester United, the real story is that Chelsea are prepared to offer Didier Drogba – a player that Tottenham Hotspur desperately need.

Modric is a prized asset and Redknapp is rightly reluctant to let him go, but Spurs a lacking a striker that can net 20 goals a season and a cash-plus-Drogba offer is worth listening to from Chelsea.

Between Jermain Defoe, Peter Crouch and Roman Pavlyuchenko, Tottenham’s only three strikers in their 25-man squad netted just 18 times in the league between them last season.

Drogba was a man plagued by injuries and a certain Fernando Torres last term but still managed to bag 13 goals.

The Ivorian striker may have just turned 33 but he still has plenty of quality in him and with 144 goals in his Chelsea career, is exactly the goalscorer Tottenham need for a top four push.

Losing Modric would be a blow, but with the likes of Rafael van der Vaart, Gareth Bale, Aaron Lennon, Sandro, Tom Huddlestone, Steven Pienaar, Niko Kranjcar and Wilson Palacious on the books, midfield is certianly one area where Spurs don’t lack strength.

Getting cash and Drogba for Modric looks like a great deal for Redknapp and the funds would allow Redknapp to pursue Sergio Aguero who is yet to receive any substansial offers since confirming he will leave Atletico Madrid this summer.

Aguero may sound unlikely on paper but Real don’t seem interested leaving Chelsea as Spurs’ main competitors for the Argentine’s signature.

Redknapp could certainly tempt Aguero into a summer move to White Hart Lane and should he do so, Spurs would look a much more frightening prospect with Drogba and Aguero up front than they would with Modric in the midfield.
