Juan Mata’s prospective move to Manchester United has left Jose Mourinho searching for a replacement midfielder, and while some reports link Basel winger Mohamed Salah to Chelsea, Real Sociedad’s Frenchman Antoine Griezmann is the more suitable purchase.
Chelsea are well versed in trumping other clubs’ transfer deals, but rather than hijack Liverpool’s pursuit of Basel’s Egyptian winger Salah, who is undoubtedly a precocious talent, vitally, Griezmann would offer a missing ingredient to the club.
That ingredient is goals. Even though Salah stunned Chelsea twice in the Champions League, those strikes represented a third of his sum total of six, in 24 Basel appearances before the winter break.
Salah has pace to burn, however, in Griezmann, Chelsea would not just be getting someone able to operate from out wide, but who would also lessen some of the scoring load currently being placed on the club’s top scorer, Eden Hazard.
Griezmann has shown a real acumen in front of goal for Sociedad this season, racking up a highly impressive total of 12 goals from only 18 La Liga appearances.
The Blues’ top-scoring dog, Hazard, has chipped in with nine Premier League goals so far from the left wing, but could do with some assistance to keep Chelsea’s 2/1-rated title tilt ticking.
Ironically, Mourinho is in the process of letting a midfielder with similar goal-scoring feathers in his cap, walk away from Stamford Bridge to join rivals Manchester United.
Chelsea and Hazard’s next chance to flex their scoring muscles arrives in the FA Cup fourth-round tie at home to Stoke, where the Belgian is a heart-warming 5/1 to hit the opening goal with Ladbrokes.
