After bagging an extra-time brace that helped Chelsea overcome a two-goal deficit against Leicester in the EFL Cup, Cesc Fabregas hoped the performance would put an end to what he called “rubbish” speculation over his future at the club.

“Hopefully this will shut up a few journalists, a few dailies, a few whatever, who are talking rubbish all the time and focus on what’s important, Chelsea winning,” the Spaniard told Sky Sports in his post-match interview.

Perhaps the former Barcelona ace was thinking about the Sun when he spoke, as the red-top had run a story on their website hours before kickoff suggesting Sevilla were keen to secure his services.

According to that article, Jorge Sampaoli had joined the back of a queue that contains AC Milan, Juventus, Valencia and Atletico Madrid in pursuing Fabregas.

A January departure remains on the cards according to the Sun, as Antonio Conte continues to prefer a midfield trio of Oscar, N’Golo Kante and Nemanja Matic in Premier League games.

Far from ready to throw in the towel on his Stamford Bridge career though, it appears Fabregas is fully focussed on regaining his place in the starting lineup.

“I was happy to play first of all from the start, and secondly if I can help the team then fantastic,” the midfielder said after helping the Blues beat the Foxes 4-2.

“I’m focusing on playing well and when I have the chance I’ll show what I can do, because I know what I can do and it’s a lot for this team,” he concluded.

Sevilla have made an unbeaten start in La Liga under Sampaoli and sit in second place, one point behind Real Madrid.

Despite that impressive opening, it appears Los Rojiblancos may miss out on their latest target as Fabregas remains committed to proving his worth at Chelsea.
