Fresh from qualification for the Champions League final, Chelsea appear to be preparing for next season already, with Gonzalo Higuain sounded out as a potential summer signing.

Roberto Di Matteo’s sterling job in a caretaker manager capacity has earned him consideration for the role full-time, and owner Roman Abramovich will meet with him to discuss his future, and plans for the club going forward.

Those talks could include potential incoming transfers, as it has long been mooted that Abramovich is desperate to bring the average age of the Chelsea squad down.

Higuain would be seen as a perfect signing in light of this, with the 24-year-old maintaining plenty of untapped potential despite already boasting a superb strike rate at both club and international level.

The Argentinian’s physical attributes would also appear to make him an ideal replacement for Didier Drogba, who is expected to exit the club on a free transfer when his contract expires this summer.

Competition for Higuain’s signature is set to be fierce however, with Juventus desperate to land a big-name attacker as they prepare for a return to Champions League football next year.

Paris Saint-Germain are also interested in the physical frontman, as ex-Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti looks to bolster his attacking options en route to building his side into a European force.

Higuain’s current club Real Madrid meanwhile, have their eye on a Premier League forward, which could lead to them allowing their striker’s sale to generate funds.

The player in question is Higuain’s international team-mate Sergio Aguero, who was long linked with a Bernabeu switch before his move to Manchester City last year, and could be tempted to team up with Jose Mourinho should he get the chance.

In light of that, Abramovich would likely be willing to pay the £35million asking price for a player he sees as essential to Chelsea’s rebuilding process.
