Newcastle United managing director Derek Llambias has told the Newcastle Chronicle that the club are still keeping an eye on former striker Andy Carroll – but a move back to the North East is still a long way off.

Carroll was at his bustling best for long periods against Swansea last weekend and capped a pretty impressive display with what should once again become a typically towering header.

With Newcastle now without Demba Ba, a move back to Newcastle – who made tepid attempts to re-sign him in the summer – is starting to look a real possibility

Speaking to the Chronicle, Llambias said: “We’ve always had a bit of a soft spot for Andy here.

“He’s a character and he’s getting older and more mature – and he’s stronger.

“It’s unlucky what has happened at West Ham. But he scored a great goal at the weekend.

“He’s still got a house up here. Andy was part and parcel of our growth.”

However, he won’t be going anywhere if West Ham teammate and BFF Kevin Nolan has anything to do with things.

Nolan – who has played with Carroll at both Newcastle and West Ham – believes east London is exactly where the striker should be plying his trade.

Speaking to the Daily Mirror, Nolan said: “I think Andy’s perfect for us and we’re perfect for him,” said the Irons skipper. “Sam is definitely the right man to get the best out of him.

“He’s in London, one of the best cities in the world. He’s playing for a great club, he’s playing with lads who know him, want to play with him. Only time will tell.

“You’ll never know what’s going to happen in the next window. We’ll just have to wait and see. But he’s got to score goals or we won’t want to buy him, will we? He’s only scored two for us.

“He’s got to start pulling his finger out for us if he wants us to buy him!”

It looks like this summer’s biggest transfer saga has already been sorted then…
