Steve Bruce is hopeful of boosting Hull City’s survival chances by signing  former Sunderland and Portsmouth midfielder Sulley Muntari.

The 29-year-old was a key component in AC Milan’s midfield under Massimiliano Allegri but now his future has been cast into doubt after Dutchman Clarence Seedorf took the reins at the San Siro.

The Ghanaian midfielder has made 44 appearances for the Rossoneri under Allegri, scoring eight goals since his move from rivals Inter in the summer of 2012.

Such was his relationship with former coach Allegri, Muntari was reported to have broken down into tears as the sacked coach said his goodbyes following the shock 4-3 defeat to Sassuolo.

The former Pompey star did not feature in Seedorf’s first game in charge and now Bruce, who took Muntari on loan to the Stadium of Light, is ready to take advantage of the situation and bring him to Hull.

The Ghana international made nine appearances for the Black Cats before returning to Inter for the 2012 season.

Three straight defeats have seen Hull, who are 5/1 to go down, sucked into the relegation battle and Bruce is looking at ways to strengthen his squad before the January transfer window closes.

The east Yorkshire outfit are 1/7 to stay up and with new strikers Nikica Jelavic and Shane Long ready for action, Muntari could be the missing piece in the puzzle as Bruce looks to cement his side’s place in the Premier League.

Bruce’s side are also still in the FA Cup – a competition Muntari knows well after lifting the trophy with Portsmouth in 2008 and with a clash against League Two Southend United to come this weekend the Tigers will be hopeful of an extended run in the competition.

The Humberside club are 50/1 win the cup but with the former Udinese man on board an each-way bet on the Tigers going all the way to the final should not be ruled out.
