There could be very exciting news on the horizon for Liverpool fans, with a three-time Champions League winning keeper reportedly signing a pre-contract agreement with the club. So, who’s the man in question?
Step forward, Iker Casillas.
With a move to Anfield seemingly close to completion, our odds-crunchers have now decided to close the book on the 36-year-old joining the Reds. And despite his advancing years, there’s every reason to believe he’d be an excellent addition.
For starters, the Spaniard’s performance level hasn’t dropped since his exit from Real Madrid.
In 2016-17, the Mostoles native kept 19 clean sheets in 33 league games for Portuguese giants Porto, conceding just 16 goals in total (or 0.48 per game).
The veteran also helped Dragoes reach the knockout stages of the Champions League during the campaign, recording a trio of impressive clean sheets in succession – against Club Brugge, FC Copenhagen and Leicester City respectively.
And of course, the Reds would surely benefit from the experience of a player who’s won a World Cup, five La Liga titles, and the Champions League on three occasions.
Especially so with Jurgen Klopp’s side heading into just their second UCL campaign since 2009.
In fact, having him around the training ground could well give Mignolet and Karius a few pointers on their game.
With just a year left on his contract, it’s also likely he’ll be available on the cheap – so it’s a no-risk deal for the Reds.
What do fans think? Would you like Casillas at Anfield, or would you rather see Klopp keep his faith in their current keepers?
A Ladbrokes spokesperson said: “It’s not a done deal just yet, but with the wheels in motion on an Anfield move, we’re not taking any chances on Casillas.”
