Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has apologised to his team mates after lashing out against Stewart Downing and receiving a red card against West Ham.

United held on to record a 2-1 win over the Hammers but the result was put in serious doubt for 30 minutes after Rooney needlessly and recklessly brought down his former England colleague at Old Trafford.

In the wake of the incident Rooney has admitted that referee Lee Mason was right to send him off and revealed he has said sorry for putting his side in such a precarious position.

Rooney will now miss three Premier League games against Everton, West Brom and Chelsea and will make his return for the Red Devils in the Manchester Derby at the Etihad on November 2nd.

While the player appears to have shown genuine remorse for his actions those who think Rooney’s words are pure hot air could be tempted by the latest odds from Ladbrokes’ Breaking Bets series.

The bookmaker has made odds of 66/1 available for anyone who thinks the United striker will emulate his performance against the Irons by scoring and then being sent off at the Etihad.

Rooney has had plenty of success against City in recent meetings, netting an impressive five goals in his last six starts against the Citizens.

However, while another goal for Rooney – who has hit four strikes already this season – looks likely, his desire to lead United to glory could be his downfall once again.

Rooney has now been shown red six times in his career to date and his ability to remain calm under pressure in an environment as hostile as the Manchester derby remains to be seen.

But at 66/1 it’s worth betting that the striker’s goal scoring prowess and hot head bubble to the fore once again.
