Like the most generous of philanthropists it’s the rumour that keeps on giving and the latest development in the Tony Kroos saga implies Manchester United are prepared to throw a £40m bid Bayern Munich’s way this summer.

With the 24-year-old midfield maestro out of contract in 2015, the Daily Mirror report David Moyes’ willingness to test the German club’s resolve by flashing the cash.

Having seen a succession of big names turn their noses up at an Old Trafford switch last summer, Moyes is apparently intent on making Kroos his marquee signing of the next transfer window.

There is even some supposition that the kind of contract United would offer the Germany international would be somewhere in the region of the unprecented mega-deal granted to keep Wayne Rooney at the club.

Speculation has naturally intensified with the clubs locked in combat at the half-way stage of their Champions League quarter-final, which is delicately poised at 1-1 following a stoic home performance from the Red Devils.

Kroos and his current employers are still the overwhelming 1/7 favourites to make it through to the semis, but at least 4/1-shots United have given themselves a platform for what would be a remarkable shock.

With their own record signing, Juan Mata, ineligible in Europe this season, the difference in midfield quality was starkly apparent between Bayern, who had absolute control of the ball, and that of United’s mishmash including £27m misfit Marouane Fellaini.

Despite signing Mata this season, Moyes clearly feels that attracting a true all-action centre-midfielder to play alongside the likes of a deep-lying Michael Carrick is essential to success next season.

The English club will still have a great deal of persuading to do to convince the Bayern youth product to switch allegiance though, especially if, as expected, United are left bereft of Champions League football next season.
