The only thing that has been reliable during David Moyes’ short reign at Manchester United so far is that with each passing day the Red Devils will be linked with a new midfielder.
Today is no different as the champions are now said to be stepping up their interest in Barcelona’s Alex Song following the Cameroonian’s latest comments.
In an interview with French TV station beIN Sport, the former Arsenal star candidly revealed that he had no real desire to leave the Emirates and said if he is to leave the Catalan giants this summer he will only consider a return to the Premier League.
The 26-year-old appears to be angling for a move back to north London, speaking to the channel about his love for “father figure” Arsene Wenger, after falling out of favour with Barca boss Gerard Martino.
However, United appear to be in pole position to offer the midfielder a route back to England and Song has hinted that he would not be averse to donning the red of Moyes’ men.
United, who are 7/5 to beat Liverpool at Old Trafford this weekend, have endured a torrid start to life under the Scot and are facing an uphill battle to finish in the top four – a feat now priced by Ladbrokes at 10/1.
However, with Moyes being granted a transfer kitty rumoured to be near the £200m mark Song could be tempted to join a host of rumoured top talents said to be heading to Carrington.
With Wayne Rooney tied to a new long-term deal and Juan Mata already bolstering the club’s midfield ranks the likes of Song and other targets including Ilkay Gundogan and Toni Kroos could be swayed to forgo one season in the Champion’s League for the chance to spearhead a new era of success at Old Trafford.
