Arsenal’s Brazilian pursuit no more than a fan-pleasing ploy

Having grown sick of watching their club sign players young enough to join the cast of Rugrats, Arsenal fans have had some actual grown men to welcome to the club of late, with the signings of Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez particularly exciting them.

Now, there’s another name to get the pulse racing at the Emirates as reports have emerged that the club are readying an £8m bid for Brazilian sensation Roberto Firmino.

However, rather than fan the flames of excitement in north London, news.ladbrokes is here to temper any rollercoaster of emotions, as it’s clear this pursuit of the Hoffenheim number 10 is nothing more than a PR exercise.

Firmino is certainly a talent, having notched 16 goals and 11 assists for the high-scoring Bundesliga outfit last term, and his eye for both a pass and goal is sure to align nicely with the Gunners’ footballing philosophy.

His importance to the German club means that they’ll be demanding far more than £8m to secure his signature though and this fee supposedly offered by Arsenal is classic Wenger.

A known miser, Wenger’s attempts to lure star players away from lesser teams for a pittance is legendary, however it has proved unsuccessful in the recent past (hence the multi-million pound purchases of Ozil and Sanchez).

Also, the Frenchman has more than a few options in the attacking midfield department where Firmino operates.

It’s possible to push the Brazilian 22-year-old into a striking role, where he scored twice in four games for Hoffenheim, but as Wenger is adamant no more forwards will arrive, it seems unlikely Firmino will be wearing north-London red this season.

Arsenal are currently 13/2 shots to win the Premier League this term, and 1/2 fancies to finish in the top four.
