As Arsenal’s defensive frailties have come under the microscope in recent weeks, it is the final line of their defence that Arsene Wenger appears to have scrutinised most closely.

And as such, he is hopeful of landing a goalkeeper this summer, to provide competition for the number one jersey with Lukasz Fabianski and Wojciech Szczesny.

Swansea stopper Michel Vorm is at the forefront of his wishlist, and Wenger is hopeful of clinching a deal for the 29-year-old in the close season.

Vorm has proved a revelation since moving to the Liberty Stadium in 2011, with his performances earning him more regular international recognition for Holland.

His value has rocketed as a result, and the Jacks could demand in the region of £8m for a player they paid only £1.5m for two years ago.

Arsenal would face competition for his signature however, as a number of European giants have expressed an interest in Vorm.

Barcelona and Manchester United are among these, and this pairing’s reputation could tempt the Dutchman to prioritise a move to either club over a switch to the Emirates.

But the regular first-team action he would be guaranteed with the Gunners could factor into his decision too, as could the success of Arsenal’s quest to achieve a top-four finish.

Indeed, Vorm can realise an ambition to play European football by remaining with Swansea next term, with their passage to the Europa League secured by their Capital One Cup success.

The opportunity to participate in the Champions League may prove too difficult to resist though, and if Arsenal can qualify for Europe’s elite competition, it would significantly bolster their chances of landing Vorm.

After beating Vorm’s side Swansea most recently, the Gunners are now 4/6 hopes to make the top four, indicating that a move for the keeper could very well be in the offing.
