Arsenal and Tottenham are set to go head-to-head in the battle to bring Klaas-Jan Huntelaar to the Premier League.
The Dutch international is out of contract at the end of the season and Schalke could be set to cash in on one of their prized assets before losing him for nothing next summer.
The north London rivals have both been linked to the striker in the past with reports even suggesting the Gunners made a last minute bid to sign the 31-year-old last month on transfer deadline day.
But it is Tottenham who could make the first move for the Dutchman by tabling a £3m bid as they look to strengthen a forward line that has so far misfired this season.
Emanuel Adebayor and Roberto Soldado have only managed three goals between them and Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino is looking to bolster his striking options in January.
Liverpool, who have also been struggling to find the back of the net since Luis Suarez’s departure are also thought to be interested in bringing the former Real Madrid man to England’s top flight.
The Reds and Arsenal, who have both suffered injury setbacks to their strikers, have not set the Premier League alight going forward yet and Huntelaar, who has hit 35 goals in 65 appearances for the Netherlands, could bolster both sides’ attacking options.
The former AC Milan man has netted four goals in eight appearances so far for the Bundelisga outfit this term, including the equaliser his side’s Champions League opener against Premier League leaders Chelsea last month.
Whoever makes the first move in the race to sign Huntelaar, his goal-poaching instincts would certainly boost any side’s chances of reaching the top four with Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham 4/9, 10/11 and 4/1 to qualify for next season’s Champions League respectively.
