Arsene Wenger has moved quickly to bolster his attack in the close season, but it still seems that a central midfielder and defender are on his radar, but one signing is unlikely to be Yann M’Vila.

Reports in France suggest that Wenger has been put off signing the French holding midfielder because of his behaviour in the past few months and so will look elsewhere for an alternative with less of a risk attached.

With Jack Wilshere still recovering from injury and talk growing that Aaron Ramsey will join Fulham as a replacement for Danny Murphy, either permanently or on loan, some added reinforcement in the central midfield area is certainly needed.

Contrary to some reports, Javi Martinez has not yet signed a deal with Bayern Munich and is still assessing his options.

Players from Athletic Bilbao tend to be a loyal breed having largely come through the club’s youth structure from a young age.

Barcelona are also interested in Martinez, but Bilbao will be reluctant to sell to another Spanish club when they can attract a similar transfer sum from abroad, if not more money.

Furthermore, there is the consensus that he would ideally prefer to operate in midfield and it is almost certain that Martinez would be shuffled into defence at Barcelona.

Martinez would fit in well at Bayern alongside Bastian Schweinsteiger in the heart of the midfield and could take them one step closer to not only regaining their Bundesliga title from Borussia Dortmund, but additionally challenging for the Champions League again.

However, they will face competition from Manchester United and Arsenal, with Wenger already working his magic once to convince Olivier Giroud that his future lied with the Gunners and not Chelsea.

Signing Martinez would probably mean breaking Arsenal’s transfer record, but it may be the final proof to Robin Van Persie of the club’s future ambitions, which may in turn encourage him to commit.
