Neither Manchester United or Arsenal had all that much to shout about after their last outing in the Premier League, but it was the continued sufferance of the Manchester United fans that would perhaps be the most difficult to take.
That could all come to an abrupt end when the pair meet each other at the Emirates, if United’s big three continue to show the form they usually do against the Gunners.
It’s Arsene Wenger’s men who are rated as favourites for the game, at 6/5, with a draw available at 5/2 and the visitors an outside 23/10-shot, so David Moyes could do with a helping hand from Robin van Persie, Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata.
The former has enjoyed this meeting whether he’s been an Arsenal or United employee, scoring in each of the past five renditions. Three of those have been for his new, Manchester-based club and two have been the first of the game.
Like his strike partner, Rooney also enjoys crossing swords with the north London club and has scored more times against them than any other club.
It’s an unwanted record Arsenal share with Aston Villa, Fulham and Portsmouth and the fact the English hit man hasn’t found the net in the last four tussles with the Gunners will surely have them feeling less wary of the danger posed.
That’s the perfect time for Rooney to strike, though, and odds of 7/1 suggest he’ll do it first. The last time Rooney did score against Arsenal, he went on to bag a hat trick in the famous 8-2 win. It’s 50/1 he repeats that dose at the Emirates.
Finally, Juan Mata must be very confident of breaking his Man Utd duck, considering the opposition. Like Rooney, Arsenal are the club the Spaniard has been most successful against in a scoring sense, bagging four in five games.
Moyes’ new number eight is 10/3 to add to that tally with a goal at any time, while he’s as long as 11/1 to break the deadlock.
