The destination of where Henrikh Mkhitaryan will play his football next season continues to be unknown, with reports claiming the winger has rejected the latest approach from Borussia Dortmund to begin contract talks.
The Independent are reporting this week that the 27-year-old, who has one year remaining on his current deal, is looking at alternative options.
Arsenal have been linked with the Armenian for several months, and after directly contributing to 31 goals in as many Bundesliga games last season, it’s easy to see why.
Arsene Wenger has already brought Granit Xhaka to the Emirates from Borussia Monchengladbach, but that alone won’t be enough to see the Gunners return to their former glories.
With 20 assists last term, Mkhitaryan has become one of the most sought-after players in Europe this summer.
Dortmund are keen to keep retain one of their star players, having already seen Mats Hummels jump ship to rivals Bayern Munich.
But with just one year left on Mkhitaryan’s current deal, Dortmund could admit defeat and accept an offer.
Valued at just over £22m by transfermarkt.co.uk, Arsenal may be forced to head nearer £30m should other reported suitors – including Chelsea – join the fray.
There’s also the chance that Arsenal could miss out this summer, hoping to land the winger on a free next year, but that comes with its pitfalls too.
It’s quite logical to suggest Dortmund and Mkhitaryan agree on a new deal, only to offload the player next summer for a much-higher fee.
There’s little doubting his quality however, and his arrival at the Emirates, should that become the winger’s next destination, would get Gooners that little bit more optimistic about next season.
