It’s hardly a statement of intent from Arsene Wenger and it’s a signing that is likely to put more doubts in the heads of Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri.

19-year-old Carl Jenkinson is heading north up the A102 to join Arsenal from Charlton, and the highly-rated youngster will provide competition for Bacary Sagna and Emmanuel Eboue at right-back.

The English-born Finnish under-21 international is comfortable at right-back or centre-back but made just seven appearances for the Addicks last season and while the youngster has plenty of potential, it’s not the signing Arsenal fans wanted to see.

Arsenal’s form collapsed dramatically following their Carling Cup final defeat to Birmingham in February, and Wenger is now under plenty of pressure to strengthen the Arsenal squad over the summer.

Except Arsenal are in decline with the likes of Cesc Fabregas, Samir Nasri, Denilson, Gael Clichy and Nicklas Bendtner all expressing or suggesting a desire to leave.

Not only does Wenger have to tempt the world’s best players to a club who, according to the Premier League betting odds, have the fourth best chance of winning the 2011/12 Premier League title, but he has to tempt his current stars into staying also.

Arsenal are 7/1 to win the Premier League title and after Manchester City pipped them to third spot last season, punters are prepared to take on Arsenal for even a top four spot.

Liverpool have already stated their intentions with the reported £20m capture of Sunderland’s Jordan Henderson, and while the England midfielder may be overpriced, the Reds won’t be shy to spend the money this summer.

Kenny Dalglish’s side are 1/1 to finish in the top four next year with Arsenal 4/7 to finish in the Champions League spots and Tottenham Hotspur 5/2.

Wenger is under extreme pressure to start producing titles at Arsenal but given the state the club’s currently in, it looks as if Jenkinson is joining a team in decline.
