It’s long been mooted that Tottenham Hotspur’s strict wage policy could start to hinder the club, and those effects may be felt very soon.
That’s because reports this morning claim Toby Alderweireld is seeking an improved deal in North London, or he’ll look for a move elsewhere.
And our traders have gone just 5/4 that the Belgian does indeed leave Tottenham next year.
The 28-year-old defender was expected to sign a new contract this summer, but no deal ever materialised.
And Tottenham’s signing of Davinson Sanchez and Juan Foyth has added plenty of competition for the centre-back roles.
Despite the new arrivals, Alderweireld’s advisor Stijn Francis believes Spurs should up the Belgian’s current £75,000-per-week contract or he will leave the club.
The Sun claim Francis believes up to seven or eight clubs want to sign the centre-half.
Valued at just over £31m by transfermarkt.co.uk, Alderweireld’s contract with Spurs runs until 2020.
He’s proven an integral part of Tottenham’s success in the last two seasons, forging an excellent partnership with compatriot Jan Verthonghen.
Since joining the club from Atletico Madrid in 2015 for £14m, Alderweireld has missed just eight league games, while chipping in with five goals.
This could all be a ploy by the Belgian’s camp to drum up interest should Sanchez or Foyth force themselves into the reckoning.
But as far as our traders are concerned, Alderweireld really could be on his way next summer.
