3 terrible Liverpool XI’s to confound Harry Redknapp’s rant

When Harry Redknapp left his last managerial post at QPR, an impending knee operation was cited as the reason. However, in light of his recent comments concerning Liverpool, perhaps amnesia played a part?

With just four Premier League games in the books, Redknapp was resolute in his scornful assessment of the current Liverpool side and their chances in 2015/16.

“I don’t fancy Liverpool at all,” said Redknapp. “I think it’s the worst Liverpool team I have seen in years. They look bang average. They are lucky to have any points.”

“I think they will do well to finish in the top five. I am not with Liverpool at all this year,” he added.

Coincidentally, having bagged seven of the first 12 points available to them, Brendan Rodgers side are now priced at 6/4 to break the top four and prove Redknapp wrong.

Of course the hugely-experienced manager is entitled to his opinion and he may yet be proved correct, but is this really the worst-looking Reds outfit in years?

We’ve dug into the annals and uncovered a few Premier League line-ups this side of the Millennium which many Liverpool fans may find themselves wincing at in disbelief.

First off though, is the team Redknapp was referring too that was soundly beaten 3-0 at Anfield by West Ham as the comparison point:

It’s difficult to know how many “years” Redknapp was referring to, but this Premier League line-up plucked from as recently as December 2010 is an absolute stinker – ironically picked by the man who pipped the former West Ham boss to the England manager’s job.

Unbelievably, this next XI was fielded in the highest tier just a few months before Rafael Benitez wrote himself into Anfield folklore by winning the Champions League. Take a bow Rafa.

Last, but by no means least in the shockingly-bad stakes is this gem of a starting XI from 2000. How this team ever earned a draw at Old Trafford is an unsolvable mystery, especially when you look at the vintage of Manchester United players they were up against.
