Southend United ended the run of Torquay United’s winning start to the season in Saturday’s match at Roots Hall.
Torquay United were sitting pretty at the top of the table on Saturday lunchtime, but first half goals from Southend’s Anthony Grant and Josh Simpson, were enough to secure the Shrimpers a 2-1 win and send Torquay into second place after Shrewsbury’s win at Rotherham.
Shrewsbury have started the season strongly with four wins and a draw from their first five games, and their 1-0 win over promotion rivals Rotherham further enhanced their title challenge – they are 8/1 to win League Two.
The Shrews kept League Two top goalscorer Adam Le Fondre quiet, he is 11/4 to finish the season on top of the charts, and Lionel Ainsworth’s early goal was enough to secure the win.
Rotherham slid back to fifth in the table but are 7/1 to win League Two.
The game of the weekend was held at Gigg Lane, where Ryan Lowe emerged the hero as Bury claimed a thrilling 5-4 win over Gillingham to send them into the playoff positions.
The Shakers Andy Bishop netted the first before being bundled over in the area to earn a penalty which Lowe converted.
Ade Akinfenwa pulled one back for the Gills with the first of his two headers before a second from Bishop put the Shakers in a commanding 3-1 lead.
Akinfenwa’s second header and Danny Spiller’s 20-yard effort levelled the scores before Efe Sodje put the advantage back in Bury’s favour only for Chris Palmer to level the scores once more.
A curling effort from Lowe secured the three points from his team and put him on four goals for the season – he is 12/1 to win the division’s top scorer award.
Despite their loss, Torquay look strong and are 5/1 to win League Two. See the full League Two football betting market here.
