The old cliché ‘a week is a long time in football’ is often trotted out to describe the mixed fortunes of a particular club or specific player.
And although it’s become a little well-worn it’s certainly a phrase that could apply to the respective ambitions of Luton Town and Wycombe Wanderers.
The League Two promotion contenders face-off live on Sky Sports this Tuesday night with the outcome of this contest pivotal to their hopes of elevation to the third tier.
And just to make things even more interesting, Ladbrokes are enhancing the price on Wycombe to win and both teams to score from 4/1 to 6/1!
Here’s why victory at any cost is essential:
Luton desperately need to address their woeful form
John Still’s side are clinging on to their play-off berth having suffered four straight defeats in a run where they’ve lost six of their previous seven games.
Another crushing blow for the Hatters would really throw the door wide open to the chasing pack.
Bury represent a real threat to Wycombe’s automatic promotion dream
Pre-season favourites Bury have come to the boil at just the right time and now sit just one point below Gareth Ainsworth’s Blues.
Seven wins in their last eight matches makes them the ones to watch with the Shakers most recently coming from behind to beat Northampton – with 10 men! That’s promotion form.
The six-pointers just keep on coming
While we’re touching upon clichés, here’s another one. The beauty of League Two is that nearly always, EVERY team still has something to play for at this stage of the season.
Luton play promotion chasing pair Northampton and Exeter after this match-up, before a trip to relegation-threatened Tranmere and then the visit of title hopefuls, Burton.
Meanwhile, Wycombe have games against local sparring partners Oxford, Jimmy-Floyd Hassebaink’s champions-elect and struggling Cheltenham all to come in the next few weeks.
If either side can nab all three points at Kenilworth Road it’ll release a lot of pressure ahead of the run-in.
