There is a lot to like about Portsmouth’s chances of winning League Two next season at 4/1 and with Chesterfield looking to be their obvious rivals, it may pay to back both to enhance the possibility of turning a profit.

Portsmouth were always up against it in League One last season as a result of their 10-point deduction, but the way they finished the campaign offers hope that they can bounce straight back up.

Across their final 15 games, Portsmouth were beaten just four times and against supposed easier opposition in League Two, they should be able to embark on a similar run of form.

They look especially strong in attack, with Tom Craddock arriving to provide competition to the likes of Patrick Agyemang and David Connolly.

Andy Barcham is also among a raft of new recruits with the potential to make an impact, while the fact that the club are now out of administration after being bought out by the Pompey Supporters’ Trust can only be positive.

Throw in that they have a bigger pull than virtually every other club in League Two when it comes to attracting players, then they are hard to oppose to finish atop the division.

However, if they are to be challenged, then Chesterfield look the best equipped to do so.

Like Portsmouth, Chesterfield have been busy in the transfer market early and the arrivals of Jimmy Ryan and, in particular, Gary Roberts are eye catching.

Despite having the second-best defensive record in League Two last season, the Spireites still finished one place outside of the play-off places, with a large factor being their struggles in taking just one point from a possible 12 from their home meetings with the bottom four.

Being more lethal against clubs battling relegation will be vital to their promotion charge and 8/1 is a fair price that they claim the League Two title.

Backing both could prove the ultimately profitable strategy, as a title win for either would ensure money in the bank.
