Both Rotherham and Preston are back to square one for their League One play-off semi-final second leg with the first encounter ending in a 1-1 draw at Deepdale.
But despite that parity, it’s the Millers who make most appeal to book a Wembley final date and extend their unbeaten record at the New York Stadium to 12 matches.
William Geldart attempts to solve the second-half of the League One play-off semi-final puzzle with three best bets for the evening’s action.
And having been successful with two out of three selections for Tuesday night’s tie between Leyton Orient and Peterborough the omens are good for a repeat success!
The fact that Preston have failed in each of their eight previous attempts to win the play-offs, losing five play-off semi-finals in the process, is perhaps reason enough reason to back Rotherham to prevail.
But don’t rely on that statistic alone. Preston have struggled for form on the road towards the tail-end of the season, losing three of their last four away from home while scoring just two goals during that sequence.
The Lilywhites have had the last word in five of their last six games, including in the pair’s first encounter with Joe Garner’s wonder strike.
And should Rotherham get themselves into a healthy lead then expect the visitors to go for broke in a bid to reach Wembley.
Their efforts may ultimately be in vain but that shouldn’t dissuade punters from backing a late attempt by Preston to rescue the tie.
Going with the above logic this is another bet that appears to be a no-brainer. The Millers have netted the opening goal in nine of their previous 11 matches and buoyed by a sell-out home crowd they can overawe their opponents and strike the first blow here.
There are no prizes for originality with this selection. But with all the evidence available, Rotherham look set to roar to a play-off semi-final success.
