Tuesday’s action witnessed League One leaders Leyton Orient suffer their first defeat of the season as they went down 3-1 away to Coventry – their sole strike an injury-time consolation.

While the east London side are hardly in crisis, one does suspect that they will not be able to repeat their hitherto success over the rest of the season; they are now 6/1 to win League One.

Orient have a tricky spell coming up, with trips to Peterborough and Swindon among the more difficult assignments, which should give a clearer indication as to their end-of-season claims.

The O’s have now won two of their last five, which represents something of a disappointment after the way they began the season. They remain ahead of Peterborough on goal difference, and just three points ahead of Wolverhampton Wanderers – both relegated from the Championship last term.

Wolves are now 11/10 favourites for the division, with Darren Ferguson’s Peterborough a 7/4 shot.

Where one feels Wolves and Peterborough hold an edge over Russell Slade’s men is in defence. They are the only two sides to have conceded fewer than 10 goals so far, allowing 7 and 8 strikes respectively.

Posh, now unbeaten in eight games, have a reputation for scoring and conceding liberally, but the London Road faithful will be delighted to see they are beginning to kick the latter habit. They have now kept clean sheets in their last seven, while Wolves have held four of their last five opponents to nil.

Ferguson has twice led his side to promotion to the Championship, while Kenny Jackett is a highly experienced operator in the higher division. Russell Slade is yet to manage in the Championship – an experience he looks increasingly likely to be denied next season.
