Defeat for FC Midtjylland in the Europa League this week marked arguably a new low point for Louis van Gaal’s reign as Manchester United manager, and rumours abound that Jose Mourinho is running out of patience with Ed Woodward and co.
United have now failed to win 18 of their last 27 matches in all competitions under the Dutchman, and if the results weren’t enough to entice frustration from the Old Trafford faithful, the style of football certainly has.
Reports have long-since linked Mourinho with the helm at the Theatre of Dreams since his departure from Chelsea earlier this season, indeed the Portuguese is 1/5 to be United’s next permanent manager.
The Special One may be merely playing games with United in a bid to force the club to dispense with Van Gaal, but the three-time Premier League winner has been increasingly linked with a return to Inter Milan.
The Italian side are enjoying a better time of it this season under Roberto Mancini, and are in contention for a Champions League place for next term, but they remain far short of the heights reached under Jose and those now set by the dominant Juventus.
Mancini is no stranger to being unceremoniously ousted, having been ditched for Manuel Pellegrini at Manchester City.
Some are adamant Mourinho has already signed a contract with United, while others steadfastly refuse to believe such a deed has been done.
If it has, then defeat for United away at Shrewsbury in the FA Cup on Monday night would surely see Jose arrive at Old Trafford sooner rather than later.
If he hasn’t, then United need to get a move on behind the scenes lest they risk losing another of Europe’s top coaches, having failed to land Pep Guardiola twice in recent years.
One way or another, some big decisions need to made in the red half of Manchester.
