England take on Italy in Bern, Switzerland next Wednesday night, with Roy Hodgson set to choose from a squad largely consisting of inexperienced players.

Hodgson has offered the chance for several youngsters to impress him, with Team GB stars Ryan Bertrand, Steven Caulker, Tom Cleverly and Daniel Sturridge among those set to take part.

The previously uncapped Jack Butland, John Ruddy and Jake Livermore are also included, within a group of players barely recognisable to that which represented the country at Euro 2012.

That said, Ruddy’s omission from the championships was down purely to injury, as was Gary Cahill’s and that of Kyle Walker, who both also return to the fold for this outing.

Among the most surprising inclusions meanwhile, is Michael Carrick, who could line up for a 23rd England cap, with the first coming 11 years ago.

31-year-old Carrick enjoyed a terrific campaign for Manchester United last term, but had indicated he did not wish to be selected for England under the previous regime of Fabio Capello.

Now under Hodgson’s stewardship, the door has been opened for a return, and Carrick could fill the central midfield void left by Steven Gerrard, who will sit out the friendly.

Frank Lampard is also restored, and is expected to captain the side in the absence of regular skipper Gerrard.

Lampard too missed out on this summer’s European Championships through injury, but the 34-year-old has since proved his fitness during Chelsea’s pre-season tour of America.

His Blues team-mate John Terry is among the most high-profile players to miss out though, with each defensive regular of Euro 2012 rested.

Phil Jagielka and Leighton Baines do make the cut, while Jack Rodwell has also been selected, and can fill in as a central defender if necessary.

Meanwhile, Wayne Rooney is another big name to sit out, as he prepares for another gruelling club campaign with Manchester United.

Andy Carroll is among the strikers Hodgson hopes to provide a cutting edge for England, and the Liverpool forward will aim to replicate his European Championship form in the match.
