Two goals in 21 appearances for club and country in all competitions is not the sort of return that supporters have come to expect from Frank Lampard across the last 15 years, but it could be argued that he is, therefore, due a goal in England’s friendly with Chile.

The Wembley showdown is an important one for Lampard, who is set to be given the captain’s armband by Roy Hodgson for recognition of the fixture marking his 100th international cap.

Lampard will become the eighth international to do so for England and it is 10/1 that he marks the milestone with the opening goal against Chile.

The Chelsea midfielder has gone six internationals without finding the target since equalising in the friendly draw with Ireland in May.

Meanwhile, it is 10 England appearances since Lampard last broke the deadlock in an international, when netting from the penalty spot in the opening three minutes in the 5-0 World Cup qualifier in Moldova last September.

On account of this, it may make more sense to accept the 10/3 that Lampard is on target in the 90 minutes against Chile.

Those eyeing a longshot can get 100/1 that Lampard has a real night to remember following the likes of Bryan Robson, David Platt and Paul Scholes in registering a hat-trick from central midfield, becoming the first England player this century to do so.

In fact, England have only scored four hat-tricks since 2001.

In terms of the match result for Lampard’s 100th cap, he will be hoping to enjoy a night more in line with Ashley Cole, instead of Steven Gerrard or David Beckham.

Beckham’s 100th game was a 1-0 defeat in France, while Sweden beat England 4-2 in Gerrard’s landmark game.

Cole was involved in a victory over Brazil and it is 5/6 that England beat Chile.
