Javier Hernandez’s 78th minute goal against Chelsea on Sunday may have meant nothing to the champions but it was worth plenty to Ladbrokes customers.

The Magic Sign were left to count the cost of their ultra-generous offer of refunding all losing bets on every market  if both teams scored.*

Little Pea’s consolation triggered £500,000 in free bets and made Super Sunday anything but for our battle-scarred traders.

Jessica Bridge of Ladbrokes said: “Hernandez’s consolation goal is the biggest of the season as far as our punters are concerned. The result only rubbed further salt into our wounds as it was one-way traffic for Chelsea pre-match.”

It was just as bad for Manchester United manager David Moyes with the under-fire Scot trimmed to 16/1 from 25/1 to be the next manager to leave his post.

The team that won the league by 11 points last term are now 14 adrift of leaders Arsenal, fairly reflected in unattractive quotes of 100/1 to defend their trophy.

The fact that they are 10/3 to make the top-four, something they have never failed to achieve in the Premier League era, says it all.

On the other hand, Chelsea look set to fight it out to the end of the season with Jose Mourinho fully justified in his decision to give old ally Samuel Eto’o the responsibility of leading the attack.

A hat-trick for the Cameroonian added another highlight to one of the most decorated careers in the game and although his six goals in the league is way off Luis Suarez’s tally of 22 strikes,  the 2005 Fifa World Player of the Year may be of some interest in the each-way market.

Chelsea are now just 2/1 to give Mourinho a third league title and are understandably quoted at a prohibitive 1/66 to make the hallowed Champions League.

United fans may have to get used to the idea of life without it.
