French champions PSG have had their bid of £14m rejected by Newcastle for attacking midfielder Yohan Cabaye but all may not be lost with out-of-favour Javier Pastore potentially the extra sweetener manager Alan Pardew requires.

The Argentinean became one of the first of many seemingly overpriced players to join the cash-rich French club after the Qatari’s takeover.

A price tag of €42m now seems ridiculous for a man who hasn’t started in the league since December 1st but the talents shown before coming to the City of Love may be enough for the Newcastle boss to part with his unsettled 28-year-old.

Laurent Blanc and his board look set to send in a second offer for the French international but with the January transfer window quickly shutting it would be a major surprise if Pardew was to let his star man go without a replacement.

However, such is the confidence behind Cabaye making the switch to the Champions League club Ladbrokes have suspended betting on the transfer being made official.

The Tourcoing-born player had been 6/4 before a rush of money quickly saw him gambled into odds-on to join Zlatan Ibrahimović and the rest of the aspiring galacticos.

Pastore had been seen as one of the brightest talents in the game after his spell in Palermo where he had moved from Buenos Aires club CA Huracan.

Behind Fabrizzio Miccoli and Edinson Cavani, Pastore helped Palermo achieve their highest ever finish in Serie A, finishing fifth and sealing qualification into the Europa League.

What could be a stumbling block is the pride of PSG’s owners with their ‘star’ signing now worth almost half what they originally laid out.

If that loss could be overcome for the bigger picture, however, one of the most sought-after players of 2011 could be heading to Tyneside, possibly waving to Cabaye on his way.
