At a lofty 7/1 to beat Manchester City within 90 minutes, Wigan are thought to have little chance of lifting their first ever FA Cup trophy via disposal of the 2011 winners of the competition.

But their recent record in the fifth month of the year gives reason for Latics fans to be optimistic ahead of the May 11 Wembley showpiece.

Victory in their last outing could very well spark the latest in what has become a tradition of successful unlikely Premier League survival missions, as Roberto Martinez’ men came from behind to beat West Brom 3-2.

And that result represented the seventh within their last eight matches to take place in May, all occurring in the past three seasons, that Wigan have avoided defeat in.

Meanwhile, that each of their past five May fixtures have ended in triumph is another huge positive to their hopes at Wembley, where the Latics succeeded 2-0 in their last appearance.

Indeed, this is notoriously the time of the season at which Wigan are most productive, and as aforementioned, the period in which they usually secure their top-flight status, much to the chagrin of their nerve-shredded supporters.

An FA Cup final can prove a welcome distraction to their crucial remaining top-flight fixtures, but also represents a very real chance of silverware for Martinez and co.

That said, they are sure to have their work cut out against a City side that has conceded just once en route to this Wembley final.

The Citizens, 2/5 to accomplish victory in normal time, have won four of their five tournament matches up to this point without conceding, and are 23/20 to further improve on that record here.

But Wigan themselves have shipped only two FA Cup goals prior to their meeting with the Citizens, and, at the peak of their powers at this time of the year, are massive 13/1 shots to triumph without being breached.
