Arsenal could succeed in the capture of soon-to-be-out-of-contract Manchester City midfielder James Milner this summer, but only if they commit to a long-term deal.

The Metro is reporting that the Gunners have emerged as rivals to Liverpool for the Blues utility man.

But any Emirates switch could ultimately hinge on whether manager Arsene Wenger is willing to bend club rules and offer the 29-year-old a four year contract.

A long-term deal of this kind is rare at Arsenal, with the Frenchman preferring to offer shorter contracts to players in and around the age of 30 or more.

But given Milner’s versatility and performances this season, Wenger may be open to the idea of change as Arsenal look to challenge for top honours again next season.

Closing in on a runners-up finish in the Premier League this term, the Gunners could benefit from a player like the Manchester City man who could fit into a number of positions.

With Arsenal enduring their fair share of injuries over the past few years, it could prove the perfect remedy.

Milner was one of the few City players to emerge from the Manchester derby with some credit and has been the subject of much transfer speculation in recent times.

Liverpool had looked like one potential destination for the former Leeds United academy product but with Arsenal able to offer Champions League football, it could be advantageGunners – provided they table a contract offer in keeping with Milner’s demands.

Arsenal can move one step closer to retaining the FA Cup this weekend, with the north London side facing Championship outfit Reading in the first of two semi-finals at Wembley.
