Paulo Di Canio’s push on Paul Alcock will rightly go down as one of the most memorable moments in Premier League history, but one referee has taken going down easily to a new level.

The video above shows official Christian Fischer apparently being assassinated by Benfica defender Luisao in a friendly against Fortuna Dusseldorf.

Benfica have stated since that it was a “lamentable display of theatre from the referee”, while boss Jose Antonio Carraca insisted the ref’s actions were a “pathetic response”.

However, Fischer remains defiant that he was assaulted in the situation and is seriously considering legal action against Luisao, despite the defender barely seeming to touch the official when running up to approach him.

What must be said against Luisao is that players should not be speeding into confront an official from the other side of the pitch in disagreement over a decision, especially in a meaningless friendly.

Rumour has it that theatrical masterminds Barcelona are considering a €4m offer for Fischer to provide back-up in case Sergio Busquets is injured.
