Despite their decent start to the season, Espanyol face an almighty challenge if they are to collect their first away point of the campaign at Real Madrid.
Espanyol have failed to win at the Bernabeu since 1996 and have lost on six of their last seven visits, including when suffering a 3-0 reverse during the last campaign.
Real may not be playing with the same attacking mentality under new boss Jose Mourinho, but with an attack consisting of the likes of Gonzalo Higuain, Cristiano Ronaldo and Mezut Ozil, it will be a surprise if Espanyol could keep a clean sheet.
Mourinho’s team are on a three-game winning sequence and are 1/6 in the La Liga betting to extend this run with a victory over Espanyol.
Espanyol are 14/1 to pick up their first away victory of the campaign, while the draw is 6/1.
Some other things that do not favour Espanyol are the fact that they have lost their only other La Liga away game this season and that Mourinho is unlikely to make widespread changes to his first team which is still “under construction”.
Both games during the last campaign finished 3-0 in Real Madrid’s favour and a repeat of this scoreline is 6/1.
Meanwhile, Real have put four goals past Espanyol at the Bernabeu in three of the last six seasons and 9/1 is available for a 4-0 home victory.
Mourinho has only conceded one goal in his four games in charge, which leads to the belief that if Espanyol are to win then it is likely to be 1-0, which can be backed at 16/1.
Higuain scored in Real Madrid’s home win over Espanyol last season and is 11/4 to open the scoring this time. See the full Real Madrid vs Espanyol match betting market.
